ziilabs-samsung-appleThe enemy of my enemy is my friend, or so the saying goes. While Samsung and Apple have been duking it out at courts over the past few years concerning the various patent infringements that one has accused the other of, along comes ZiiLabs. ZiiLabs has filed a patent infringement lawsuit in the United States against both Samsung and Apple, where the lawsuit claims that selected devices from Samsung (which will include the many Galaxy branded handsets, tablets as well as laptops) and Apple (which will comprise of various iPhone and iPad models, the iMac and MacBook Pro) have actually infringed upon a number of ZiiLabs patents.

ZiiLabs at this point in time does own more than 100 U.S. patents in the graphics, processor and 3D spaces. From there, ten of these patents have been asserted in the lawsuit, where ZiiLabs intends to claim past as well as future damages for patent infringement from both companies, in addition to carrying out injunctions against Samsung and Apple.

This particular was filed on 10 March 2014 in the Eastern District of Texas. ZiiLabs (formerly known as 3DLabs Inc., Ltd.) happens to be a pioneer in 3D graphics, and they have a fair number of products released in the past that touched on media-rich application processors, advanced software and enabling hardware platforms. I suspect that this will be a long and drawn out affair, as both legal teams from Samsung and Apple would have had plenty of experience in dealing with such circumstances.
