1398356197-2014-04-24-at-18-15-58-Facebook has expressed their interest in standalone apps that can accomplish specific tasks, like how Messenger is an app that allows chatting with Facebook friends. However we doubt that Facebook will be able to churn out that many apps in a short period of time, which is why acquisitions make sense. The company recently acquired WhatsApp and Oculus VR, and now they have acquired a Finnish company by the name of ProtoGeo who developed the app Moves.

According to a post on the Moves website, they confirmed the acquisition. “Today, we’re delighted to announce that Facebook has acquired our company and the Moves app. Since we launched Moves, we’ve been focused on running a simple and clean activity diary that millions of people have enjoyed using.”

“Now, we’re joining Facebook’s talented team to work on building and improving their products and services with a shared mission of supporting simple, efficient tools for more than a billion people.” As expected with most of Facebook’s acquisitions, Moves will continue to operate as a standalone app so for Moves users, it looks like nothing has changed, at least for now.

For those wondering what the Moves app is about, it’s basically a fitness and activity tracking app. There are plenty of those around but one of the ways Moves differentiates itself is by creating a visual log of the places that you’ve been and based on those coordinates, can also determine any relevant points of interest. The app will take advantage of the sensors in the phone to see if you ran, walk, or took a car, bus, train, and etc., all of which are factored into the steps taken and calories burnt.

Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg has stated that the goal of their apps are long-term solutions and are investments into the future, so at this point in time, we’re not sure what Facebook has planned, but it looks like it’s another feather in Facebook’s proverbial hat.
