Remember the “eye in the sky” idea, where satellites are powerful enough to keep track of every single person on earth, with street cameras helping it keep track of our movement, coming in and going out? Well, it seems that such an idea is about to be realized soon, where such a surveillance system has already been flying above America’s cities, being able to look out for crime round the clock – sounds like something Bruce Wayne/Batman would love to have.
This particular system is currently being trialed in Baltimore, Dayton and Compton, where the long arm of the law gets some help as police can see crimes live – as well as rewind in order to check out those crimes committed in the past. It makes use of a plane that has been equipped with high resolution cameras, flying around for up to half a dozen hours at any one time.
Needless to say, to have something like this easily makes it one of the most advanced surveillance systems created to date, with the Hawkeye plane-mounted camera system that is capable of surveying a 25 square mile patch of a city for up to six hours. Ross McNutt, a retired Air Force veteran, is the one who developed this system, and touts his product to be ‘a live version of Google Earth, only with TiVo capabilities.’ Hopefully future crime can be reduced drastically if the Hawkeye is implemented properly, coordinating with ground forces along the way.
