tim-cookWith about 800 million iTunes accounts having a credit card linked to them, Apple has already established a system in which mobile payments could occur if they decided to implement it. After all we’ve seen how iTunes can be used to purchase apps, music, movies, subscriptions, and so on, so why not use it to pay for real-life stuff, right?

The rumors have been flying that Apple could be looking into mobile payments and that they are  apparently “very serious” about it, but those are just rumors, or are they? Speaking in a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Apple’s Tim Cook was quoted as saying that he found mobile payments to be a very interesting idea.

“I think it’s a really interesting area. We have almost 800 million iTunes accounts and the majority of those have credit cards behind them. We already have people using Touch ID to buy things across our store, so it’s an area of interest to us.” Cook adds that he believes that no one has really figured it out yet, even though some companies are trying.

He also states that if “you still have a wallet in your back pocket and I do too which probably means it hasn’t been figured out just yet.” We’re not sure if Cook is just expressing his opinion here or if he is hinting at what’s to come. After all it was only during the same interview that Cook drop hints about new products that are on its way.

What do you guys think? Will Apple be able to figure out mobile payments that could essentially see us leaving our homes without our wallets or purses?
