lan-party-gaming-houseBack in the day, gamers would prefer playing on the console over the PC simply because consoles were cheaper, not to mention they did not have to worry about hardware requirements because consoles games were catered to the console’s hardware, versus PC games in which different developers would require different levels of hardware.

This meant that unless you had the money to spend on a gaming rig, you might not be able to play the latest games. That is not true today as computers are becoming cheaper to build, especially gaming rigs, which is why it isn’t surprising to learn that PC games nowadays are starting to make more money than consoles. This is according to a recent report by DFC Intelligence (via PCR).

According to DFC Intelligence’s owner, David Cole, it has been found that PCs are now seen as a necessity versus consoles which are considered a luxury item (we’re not sure when consoles were ever considered a necessity). “Among core gamers there is a heavy overlap with most console gamers also playing on a PC. The big difference is that consoles are now the luxury item and PCs are the necessity. Just a few years ago the reverse was true. This means PCs have the broader audience.”

Cole also mentions that it is MOBA games such as DotA 2 and League of Legends that are dominating. “The MOBA games League of Legends and Dota 2 dominate everything else by an order of magnitude in terms of more usage than other products.” He also stated that free-to-play games also helped to drive the growth, which we guess does help titles such as DotA 2 and League of Legends become more adopted by gamers.

This does not mean that the console games revenue will shrink as Cole believes that with new consoles released by Sony and Microsoft, it should help to drive up revenue for console games in the future.
