Apple has always had this air of mystery around them, namely because they typically choose not to respond to rumors, whether it be to confirm them or debunk them, and have usually released boilerplate statements which seems to be neither here nor there. This is partly thanks to the Cupertino company’s PR chief, Katie Cotton, who has recently announced her plans to step down from the company.
Her decision to leave Apple seems to be amicable and in a statement released to the folks at Re/code, Apple’s spokesman, Steve Dowling, wrote, “Katie has given her all to this company for over 18 years. She has wanted to spend time with her children for some time now. We are really going to miss her.”
When reached for comment, Cotton wrote, “This is hard for me. Apple is a part of my heart and soul.” Cotton has been at Apple for nearly two decades and had a position of the VP of worldwide communications. She has worked under both Steve Jobs and Tim Cook and helped provide narrative for product launches, ranging from the iMac to the iPad.
Cotton’s departure is in a string of departures by other Apple executives who have also been working for the company for many, many years. This included executives such as Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO; Greg Christie, the director of Human Interface, and hardware engineering head, Bob Mansfield who had initially announced his retirement, only to stay and work on special projects.
