smartwatch-joystickA smartwatch is more often than not seen as a kind of productivity tool that will enhance your smartphone or tablet device, allowing you to be notified of an incoming email or text message without having to pull out your smartphone from the pocket. Well, this particular smartwatch prototype is different, as it will also double up as a joystick. Yep, you read that right – a joystick.

Thanks to a bunch of US researchers who have come up with a new smartwatch prototype, it will rely on gesture commands as well as twists in order to have you go through the various menus. Could it be the blueprint for smartwatches of the future in order for them to deliver a broader range of applications? Only time will be able to tell.

For instance, twisting the watch in a clockwise direction would let you change the time, and best of all is, such a smartwatch design would be able to be retro-fitted with current technology. This particular team from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, would also offer you a chance to twist the timepiece anti-clockwise to help turn the hands on a clock, and you can click it like a giant button.

It is hoped that this timepiece will eventually work alongside standard touchscreens, voice activation and buttons, and heck, it can even handle a spot of Doom right on your wrist!
