galaxy-s5-google-play-editionBack in 2013, Google announced Google Play Edition handsets which we guess could be thought of as the precursor to the rumored Android Silver program. At that time only two devices were part of it, and one of them was the Samsung Galaxy S4. The hardware of the phone remained the same but instead of Samsung’s TouchWiz UI, it just used a stock version of Android instead.

Now we’re sure that there are users out there who wouldn’t mind a stock version Galaxy S5 and thanks to an image spotted on the official Android website, there is a chance that Google/Samsung could be giving the Galaxy S5 the Google Play Edition treatment as well. As you can see in the screenshot above, the Galaxy S5 is pictured amongst Google’s other Google Play and Nexus devices.

Now there has been no official word from Google or Samsung, and Google certainly did not mention anything at Google I/O yesterday morning, so we’re not sure if the image is simply a placeholder or if it is an announcement that Google has yet to make. However like we said, we don’t think it’s that huge of a stretch of the imagination to think that wouldn’t be Galaxy S5 Google Play Edition.

Either way we’ll try not to speculate too much for now, but check back with us in the future to see if there are any announcements to be had.
