xperia z2aIf you’re looking to get your hands on a smaller and possibly cheaper version of the Sony Xperia Z2, you might be interested to learn that Sony has officially announced the Xperia Z2a in Taiwan. When Sony unveiled the handset at that time, they did not mention any of the handset’s specs, but thanks to the folks at GSMArena, we now have a better idea of what we can expect.

Based on what they found, it turns out that the Xperia Z2a is essentially a smaller version of the Xperia Z2. It will feature a 5-inch 1080p HD display. It will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset and will also pack the same 20.7MP rear-facing camera as the Sony Xperia Z2. Storage will also be expandable and will also support both 3G and LTE connectivity.

The handset is also identical to the Xperia ZL2 which was announced in Japan, so we guess the Xperia Z2a is essentially the non-Japanese variant of the handset. Also unlike the Xperia Z2, the Xperia Z2a will sport a plastic body (where the Xperia Z2 used glass and metal) and will sport a battery that’s 200mAh smaller.

The Sony Xperia Z2a is expected to arrive in Taiwan next month but no word on whether it will be making its way stateside or other part of the world. No word on how much it costs either, but hopefully its slightly smaller stature and use of plastic will help keep its costs down.
