xiaomi logoXiaomi might not be a brand familiar to everyone in the Western world, especially since the majority of their products are limited to the Asian market. However for those who have been following the news, you might have heard how former Googler, Hugo Barra, has come on board Xiaomi.

Could that mean a North American expansion for Xiaomi? Well according to Android Authority – yes. Speaking at Xiaomi’s event at the Indonesian Cellular Show, Xiaomi’s Global VP, Hugo Barra, confirmed that they are working towards making their way into North America. As it stands he estimates that the company will begin “working on North America” next year.

Barra clarified that they are not looking to enter North American markets this year because they are working in parallel to enter into 10 other markets as well. Barra notes that the North American market will be a challenging one and that they will only start working on their plan next year. Now we know that Xiaomi has plans for a global expansion so it definitely looks like they have their work cut out for them.

The Chinese company is well-known in Asia for creating powerful smartphones that are incredibly affordable. They are also incredibly popular as we have seen in the past, such as being able to sell 100,000 units in a matter of minutes. It is unclear how Xiaomi’s offerings will be received by their Western customers, but it will be interesting to see them try. What do you guys think? Are you excited that Xiaomi phones could be officially sold in North America in the future?
