Earlier this year, Facebook announced that they would be acquiring Oculus VR for a whopping $2 billion. In many ways it came as a surprise as not many had expected Facebook to have any interest in the technology, but we guess that it’s one way of diversifying the company and expanding into new territory while taking advantage of their huge resources.
That being said, for those who were rooting for the deal to go through, you will be pleased to learn that the regulators have given Facebook and Oculus VR the greenlight, ultimately making the sale of Oculus VR to Facebook official. According to a joint statement released by both companies, “We’re looking forward to an exciting future together, building the next computing platform and reimagining the way people communicate.”
It will be interesting to see where Facebook goes with this. After all like we said, many were surprised as Facebook was not really a company known for gaming. However despite the possibilities that could take place, there have been some who weren’t too thrilled about this acquisition.
One of the more vocal oppositions came from Markus Notch Persson, the creator of Minecraft, who announced that he would be cancelling the game designed for the Oculus Rift because he felt that Facebook creeped him out. He also added that if he had brought the game onto the Oculus Rift, it would have been for free too. In any case we guess we’ll just have to wait and see where this leads.
