sprint-eventSprint has recently started to hand out invites to an event that they will be holding on the 19th of August. Not much is known about the event, save for the tagline which reads, “Take The Edge Off”. It is unclear as to what Sprint could be implying, although there has been some speculation as to what it could be about.

For starters, some have speculated that the announcement could be about the successor to the Kyocera Hydro Edge which was announced around this time last year. Given the handset’s somewhat ruggedness, we have to wonder if it will tie in with the Kyocera’s Sapphire Shield display that they have been teasing recently.

While that remains a possibility, an alternate theory is that it could be Sprint’s answer to the Verizon Edge program. The program was launched last year and it’s basically Verizon’s answer to T-Mobile’s JUMP! and AT&T’s Next program. Assuming that this is the case, it would pretty much make Sprint the last to the party to offer such a financing program.

For those unfamiliar with the gist of those programs, it’s basically where carriers will allow users to upgrade their phones more than once a year. This is handy for those who are constantly switching to the latest handsets but don’t want to have to wait for two years before they can get their next device (on contract).

In any case this just speculation for now, but do check back with us on the 19th of August for the details!
