There are different types of gamers – there are those who play games as a means to pass time or when they have a little bit of spare time, then there are those who play games all day either competitively or professionally. Now for the most part, Nintendo has catered to casual gamers and if you’ve ever played Nintendo games, you’ll know to be true.
However it seems that Nintendo could be shifting their focus from the casual gamer to the core gamer, or at least that’s what Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto seems to be hinting at. According to an interview with Miyamoto in the latest issue of Edge, Miyamoto seemed to be saying that Nintendo could be shifting their focus onto core gamers.
When speaking about people who “passively” enjoy games, Miyamoto was quoted as saying, “Their attitude is, ‘okay, I am the customer. You are supposed to entertain me.’ It’s kind of a passive attitude they’re taking, and to me it’s kind of a pathetic thing. They do not know how interesting it is if you move one step further and try to challenge yourself [with more advanced games].”
It’s an interesting direction that Nintendo could take, although we’re not sure if doing that will further alienate their customers who have all been asking for Nintendo to release games on mobile, or if it could attract a new breed of more “hardcore” gamers who might have otherwise found Nintendo’s games a bit too casual for their liking, but what say you?
