sony curved sensorAccording to a report from yesterday, Sony is said to be working on a new compact camera called the KW1. What makes the camera pretty unique is the fact that it will feature a 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS sensor and a prime lens which is pretty unusual as far as compact cameras are concerned.

However according to the folks at Sony Alpha Rumors, it seems that they have recently “confirmed” another unique feature of the KW1, which is that it will be the first camera from Sony to utilize the company’s very own curved sensor. For those hearing about this curved sensor for the first time, Sony published a photo taken by the sensor about a month ago.

According to Sony at that time, one of the benefits of the curved sensor is that it supposedly follows the curvature of the human retina, thus it makes photos more “realistic”, as in they are captured in the same way that we look at objects or scenery in real life. Sony also claimed at that time that the sensors were ready for mass production, so we guess it looks like the Sony KW1 could be the first to sport it.

Of course real world application of such sensors remains to be seen, so you can be pretty sure that we are excited to see what Sony has in store for us. The rumors claim that the KW1 could be announced in the next few days, so be sure to check back with us later this week or next for the details, if there are any to be had.
