galaxy gear tizen

Recently we featured the first ever custom Tizen ROM for the original Galaxy Gear smartwatch from Samsung. Released last year the smartwatch was initially powered by a modified version of Android. Earlier this year Samsung updated it to its homegrown Tizen OS. The first custom ROM added root and a couple of other features and now the developer has released an updated version of the TizenMod 3 custom ROM.

The custom ROM is based on the latest NF1 and NE5 firmwares for both Samsung Gear and Gear 2 smartwatches. It includes all of the features that debuted previously, including Android L font, CPU frequency monitor, governor modification support and root access. Support for custom icon theme, custom fonts, ringtones and alarms has also been added.

What sets this latest release apart from the rest is that it essentially opens up Samsung’s Gear and Gear 2 smartwatches. Once the TizenMod 3 is installed users no longer need to have a Samsung mobile device on hand to install a new application on these wearable devices. Simply put the .apk file on the phone and manually install it.

To flash this ROM on a Samsung Gear or Gear 2 smartwatch you will require the Odin software as well as the required files and instructions that need to be followed, which can be found here for the original Gear and here for the Samsung Gear 2.
