There is no official Snapchat app available for Windows Phone. Looks like in its bid to close the app gap Microsoft is not waiting for Snapchat to port over its official application. The company has built an alternative of its own for Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1. Microsoft Research is behind this app which offers the essentially same core feature as Snapchat, ephemeral messaging.

Like Snapchat users can send time limited messages using the application. Users will also be able to send texts and media which can be limited to a few seconds or a select number of views.

The app is basically a research experiment through which Microsoft aims to find out how users “create, share and converse,” so its unlikely that Snapchat is going to have any challenge from WindUp on other platforms. On the other hand Windows Phone users get an app that is similar in function to one almost everyone is raving about these days.

Windup for Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 8.1 is available as a free download from Windows Phone Store. As previously mentioned its unlikely that this app will ever be expanded to other platforms. However WP users might be interested to try out this ephemeral messaging client built just for their platform.
