pop megaWhen it comes to making multipurpose devices, ASUS has done an interesting job with products like the ASUS PadFone. It’s essentially a phone housed in a tablet that can also be separated and used as a phone only. This is great for those who want a tablet and a phone at the same time. Well it looks like Alcatel could have picked up a thing or two from ASUS as they have recently unveiled the Alcatel Pop Mega.

Essentially the Pop Mega is a phablet. It will sport a whopping 6-inch display but what sets it apart from other smartphones of that size is that it comes with a Buddy. The Buddy is basically a separate phone, as you can see in the photo above, that looks like and acts like a feature phone.

The idea is that it will be used for calls if you’d rather not use the battery of the Pop Mega. It will pair with the phablet via Bluetooth and will be bundled in the same box as the Pop Mega. It should be noted that Alcatel is not the first company to try this as HTC has attempted something in the past, albeit it was more expensive and sold separately.

The Pop Mega will be priced less than $250 when it does go on sale via Tracfone’s prepaid Straight Talk brand next month. The company will also be releasing other Alcatel Pop phones like the 4-inch Pop Star and the 5-inch Pop Icon.
