auroraIf you ask me, there is nothing better than to have a lovely guide dog help the blind around. Not only does it offer companionship, it also doubles up as a blind person’s security guard in certain situations. Well, what happens when you are not exactly fond of man’s best friend? Perhaps the next best thing might suffice – Aurora.

Noemi Kiraly, who lives in Budapest, started to experience a gradual loss of her sight since she was young, and today, she is close to being totally blind. Thankfully, there is a group of Hungarian postgraduate students who intend to help her out by working on the Aurora device. The Aurora device will intend to assist Kiraly ‘pulse’ through everyday obstacles via an ultrasonic sensor, at least according to Aurora co-developer Hunor Menyhart.

In a nutshell, this would allow a visually impaired person to get around through a variant of echolocation like a bat, making one end up like Daredevil of Marvel Comics. I am quite sure that much work still needs to be done before it will be perfected, but should it be made available and affordable to the masses, then it would be a technology breakthrough that is worth hailing. Do not mistake this for the Aurora Dream Headband though.
