Wireless charging or inductive charging is a technology that hasn’t made it into a whole lot of consumer electronic devices up till now. There are certain manufacturers who are pushing out smartphones that are compatible with wireless charging but it will take a considerable amount of time before every other consumer electronic device supports it. If an evidence found in Chromium code is to be believed, Chromebooks might get the wireless charging ability at some point in the future.

A reddit user calls our attention towards evidence in Chromium code which deals with enabling inductive charging on a ChromeOS board carrying codename Ryu.

It was confirmed back in July that a new Chrome OS board named Ryu has been added to the open-source repository. The board appears to have support for USB type-c as well.

Just to be clear this doesn’t mean that there’s a new Chromebook called Ryu that’s going to hit the market soon. It means that Ryu is a board on which wireless charging is possibly being tested. It cannot be said for sure at this point in time that whether Ryu board will actually be used in a future Chromebook of if it will only remain a test bed.

It is difficult to say right now when Chromebooks will ultimately receive the wireless charging feature, but at least we can rest assured now that someone is looking into it.
