new 3dsIf there is one criticism that Nintendo faces over its products is the fact that they are region locked. This means that if you wanted to play a game, you’d have to wait for it to arrive for your region before you could, which means that any idea you’ve had about importing games from the likes of Japan would be out the window.

So far Nintendo has region locked the likes of their Nintendo 3DS handheld console as well as the Wii U, and if you were hoping that things would change with the new Nintendo 3DS and 3DS XL consoles, you’d be flat out of luck. This was confirmed by Nintendo to the folks over at GameSpot,

This is in stark contrast to Sony and Microsoft who have made their products region-free. Back in 2013, Nintendo’s President Satoru Iwata defended the company’s policy. According to Iwata, “There are many different regions around the world, and each region has its own cultural acceptance and legal restrictions, as well as different age ratings. There are always things that we’re required to do in each different region, which may go counter to the idea that players around the world want the freedom to play whatever they want.”

Either way we doubt that Nintendo will be changing their policies anytime soon, so if you were hoping to play certain games in your region, we guess the best way would be to remain patient and hope that it will be eventually released for your market.
