twitter-raidHere is some information on what researchers from the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA) at University College London have managed to uncover – the different spots in the UK where Twitter users are most likely to throw in at least one swear word in their tweets. Having monitored all geo-located tweets sent from smartphones over in the UK, the findings point to both Redcar as well as Cleveland to be the most profane area throughout the UK where tweets are concerned.

The findings were sampled between 28 August to 4 September, and if you would want your smartphone to be bombarded by the least number of profanities found in tweets, perhaps it might be best to follow folks who happen to hail from Oxford and Westminster. Over 1.3 million tweets were taken into account, and that included football’s transfer-deadline day, so it might have played a bearing of sorts on the results, too.

The highest peak for coarse language happened after Arsenal signed Manchester United’s forward Danny Welbeck at approximately 21:00 on Monday, 1 September. As for the other spikes that appeared, it came in mostly on Saturday and Sunday afternoons as those are when football matches take place. Weekdays do point to a higher level of incidence with profane tweets during the mornings as folks got ready for work.
