When you want to prevent unauthorized access to your phone, all you’d have to do is setup a passcode, or in some cases and with some phones, you can use fingerprint scanning as well. However a new Kickstarter project for a device called SALT is hoping to take security to the next level.

Basically the SALT card is a credit card-sized card. The card will pair with your device via Bluetooth and basically as long as the card and phone are within range of each other, PIN or passcodes won’t have to be entered. The card will also have a feature in which you will be able to limit some of your phone’s functions if the card is not within range.

This can be done through a dedicated Android app that will be the companion to the SALT card. In fact due to its shape and size, the SALT card can be slipped into wallets or purses which in turn lets you track down your item should it go missing. Its creators also claim that the battery of the SALT card is around 1 year, so you won’t have to worry about charging it or changing its batteries anytime soon.

It is a pretty clever idea and it does sound like it could be a potentially new way for you to protect your device on top of the existing security features offered by your phone’s OEM and the software. If you’d like to learn more or contribute to its Kickstarter campaign, head on over to its website for the details.
