mark-zuckerbergA few weeks ago and last we checked, WhatsApp had over half a billion active users that were using their app. In fact at the rate it is growing, we wouldn’t be surprised if WhatsApp could eventually hit the 1 billion mark which is what Facebook’s CEO and co-founder, Mark Zuckerberg, had his eye set on.

Earlier Zuckerberg had mentioned that his goal for WhatsApp when Facebook acquired them is to hit the 1 billion mark. However like we said at the rate WhatsApp is growing, it would not be an impossible situation, which is why Zuckerberg has since revised his goal. Speaking to Bloomberg (via The Next Web) at an event in Mexico City, Zuckerberg stated that he believes WhatsApp could even hit the 2-3 billion mark.

“I think WhatsApp is going to be the global text messaging platform. I think we’re going to have an opportunity for WhatsApp to connect 2 or 3 billion people.” It sounds like a very lofty goal although we should point out that there are plenty of other messaging apps around that could provide WhatsApp with stiff competition.

In fact China’s WeChat could be thought of as a close competitor. Earlier this year the company revealed that they had 355 million active users, and presumably that number is higher now. Will WhatsApp hit the 2-3 billion mark? We guess we’ll have to wait and see, but what do you guys think their chances are?
