glowing-cycle-lanesThe Netherlands has a “smart highway” that boasts of glow-in-the-dark road markings, and this particular idea has been pitched to folks living in the U.K. as a potential improvement so that cyclists themselves will be able to enjoy a safer environment whenever their rubber hits the road. This smart highway will utilize a special kind of green paint that will charge up during the day as long as the sun shines through the cloud brightly enough, and at night, such paint will glow-in-the-dark.

These glow-in-the-dark cycle lanes are currently having their viability tested, which has also garnered the attention of U.K. planners. Artist Daan Roosegaarde, one of the road markings’ designers, said, “The glowing lines are a little … Daft Punk look-alike but they are to do with safety. The three lines merge into one and you feel that it guides you. With fog, you see them more than with standard light.”

Sounds like something that is worth implementing, especially when you take into consideration it will not cost too much in the long run when it comes to lighting them up at night, not to mention the potential of having it save the lives of those who share the road with other vehicles.
