Over the last week we reported that an Android Wear update was rolling out for LG G Watch and the Moto 360 in some regions and today Google has formally announced this update. It is actually a big update for Android Wear, which is a relatively new wearable device platform developed by the Mountain View company. This update adds GPS and music features to Android Wear devices.
With this update Android Wear gains support for smartwatches that have built-in GPS. This means that users can now track things like their route, distance and speed when they’re riding their bike or out and about for a run.
Support for listening to music through Bluetooth headphones also comes through this update, so users have to carry one less device when they’re out for a run, without having to give up on the ability to blast some tunes while they’re at it. Music can be locally stored on the smartwatch and then be played back through Bluetooth headphones.
Smartwatches that have GPS can also take advantage of applications such as MyTracks and Golfshot, while the latest version of Google Play Music also becomes compatible with Android Wear following this update.
Google has also created eight new app collections in the Google Play store which will make it easier for users to browse and find applications that work the best for them and their wearable device.
