robot-care-bearThere is just something about teddy bears that make life a whole lot more, er, bearable – pardon the pun. After all, teddy bears are extremely cute toys to own, and they can be extremely comforting to boot. Here is an idea – how about the Huggable, which is a robot teddy bear project? This robot teddy bear had seen its early versions tested in the Highlands, and right now, it is being featured in a children’s hospital in the US.

The Huggable project happens to be part of the Personal Robots Group at Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab. It was close to a decade ago when a prototype design of the robot was depicted to nursery children in Avoch, near Inverness. Of course, since the passage of time has passed, this new version would be used to figure out just how robots assist the sick or even injured children in their road to recovery.

Having gone through a redesign in the past four years, this robot would integrate an Android-powered smartphone so that it will be able to handle whatever computing requirements, not to mention allowing it to be a whole lot smaller in size, which makes it easier to tote around. The Huggable robot teddy bear is now more infant-like in nature, and is able to portray additional expressive gestures. Majority of its physical parts happen to be 3D printed, but this might change in the future if it were to go through a mass manufacturing process.
