About a week ago, we reported that the Hungarian government was thinking about taxing the internet. This meant that internet service providers would be taxed depending on how much data was being transferred, and safe to say no one was happy about it to the point where there were protests regarding the proposal.
Well thankfully such a law did not come into effect. It has been reported that the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban decided to ditch the plan in the face of such huge opposition from his people. Orban confirmed that they would not be going ahead with the proposal on a radio show early Friday morning.
Instead, he has decided to hold a nationwide public consultation regarding internet regulation at the start of next year. Speaking on Radio Kossuth, “This tax in its current form cannot be introduced because the government wanted to extend a telecommunications tax, but the people see an internet tax. If the people not only dislike something but also consider it unreasonable then it should not be done.”
He also added, “We really should see somehow where the huge profits generated online go, and whether there is a way to keep some of it in Hungary.” Well hopefully whatever it is that the Hungarian government figures out, that it will be accepted by its people.
