microsoft-logoMicrosoft has started to offer Windows as well as Windows Phone software without charging device manufacturers a single cent in order to help boost the market and in turn, demand for Windows and Windows Phone devices – as long as these happen to have a maximum screen size of 9”. In other words, Microsoft is targeting the mobile device market, knowing that there is plenty of potential and growth in this segment in the coming years. In other words, using Windows is just about as cheap as Android – and perhaps even cheaper in the long run especially when you take into consideration how Microsoft collects royalty fees from a slew of companies which rely on Android to power their devices.

So far, this particular effort has been panning out to be pretty successful, at least according to Microsoft’s vice president who is in charge of operating systems. Terry Myerson, when contacted concerning the license-free Windows imitative, claims that another 50 new companies have already begun to work on rolling out phones and tablets that will feature Windows software.

Of course, these 50 companies would not include the major players such as Samsung, HTC and LG, but rather, it will involve the smaller (and subsequently, lesser known) companies in the form of Blu, Archos, Kazam, and Yezz. However, it does look like much more work needs to be done in terms of the advertising front so that more people are aware of Windows Phone on other brands other than Nokia alone, for instance.
