Most smartwatches these days tend to have relatively short battery life. This is due to their displays which are usually quite bright and stunning, which unfortunately at the same time also drains its batteries pretty fast. While not as pretty, devices like the Pebble smartwatch offer an alternative due to its e-ink display that offers slightly longer battery life.

Well if you’re looking for an e-ink smartwatch, you might be interested to learn that Onyx is working on a smartwatch of their own that will use an e-ink display as well. The device will feature a 1.56-inch e-ink display that will reportedly only draw power when the screen is refreshed, which means that its display can always remain on without drawing too much power at the same time.

The device will be waterproof and as expected, will be able to sync with smartphones over Bluetooth. It will include a pedometer that lets it track your steps, and will sport physical buttons that will allow you to navigate its interface, so if you were hoping for a touchscreen display, we guess you’ll have to look elsewhere.

However if battery life is important to you, then perhaps the e-ink display could be a huge draw. Unfortunately Onyx only plans to release the watch in 2015 which means that if you can’t wait, there are alternatives out there like the Pebble that could be worth checking out. In the meantime you can check out the Onyx smartwatch in action in the video above, courtesy of the folks at ARMdevices.net.
