OWC1600DDR3S32SApple’s 5K iMac launched yesterday and the basic model with 8GB of RAM is priced at $2,500 which is admittedly rather expensive, but then again it’s the display that you’re most probably paying for. Now 8GB of RAM for the most part should be enough to get users through most tasks.

However if you’re a power user and want more RAM, you might be interested to learn that OWC has recently announced a RAM upgrade kit for the new Retina iMac. The come will offer 8GB kits priced at $99.79, 16GB kits at $197.99, and a 32GB kit for $395, which would basically allow users to replace the entire RAM in the base model.

If you thought that $395 is a lot of money, well we suppose it is, but then again if you were to configure the iMac via the Apple Store, 32GB of RAM will cost you a whopping $600 extra, meaning that you’d be saving $200 with OWC’s RAM modules. Bumping your iMac to 16GB of RAM would involve you paying an extra $200, while OWC’s option would basically see you buy an additional 8GB kit for $99.79, thus saving you almost $100 in the process.

Of course the “downside” is that you’ll have to install the modules yourself, which to be fair is pretty easy as Apple has provided easy access to the RAM modules on the iMacs. If you’d like to get your hands on the RAM upgrade kits, head on over to OWC’s website for the details.
