battery-630x420Batteries these days are improving as researchers and scientists come up with new ways of charging or new types of batteries that are an alternative to what we have today. Now if you’re not a fan of waiting a few hours for your smartphone or tablet to charge, you might be interested in the work that is being done by researchers in the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

The researchers have come up with a new lithium-ion battery that they claim can charge up to 70% of its total capacity in about two minutes! What this means is that you could plug your phone into its charger, make yourself a drink, and you’re back in business, assuming that you don’t need it to hit 100%.

According to Science Daily, the researchers are eyeing its potential in electric cars where range and charging times are an issue. In fact these batteries are said to charge 20 times as fast as today’s offerings and will offer up 10,000 recharge cycles. This means that not only could your electric car charge up in a matter of minutes – their goal is 15 minutes – but it could save drivers from having to replace their batteries as often.

The researchers are hoping to get their new battery technology into the market in two years, so hopefully they will be able to hit new strides and make even greater progress in the meantime.
