Folks who live in New York City often tend to have a special bond with The Big Apple. For them it is the greatest city in the world and I’m sure many non-NYC residents think along the same lines. Starting today residents have a new way of showing their love for the city online, by getting their hands on a .nyc domain.

It was announced last year that businesses, government entities and residents will be able to purchase custom .nyc domains. This concept isn’t new because we have already seen London doing the same thing.

Initially only city officials and trademark owners were allowed to purchase these custom domains. With that step out of the way any and all NYC residents can now make the purchase. One must have proof of residence in any one of the five boroughs, Manhattan, Staten Island, Brooklyn, The Bronx and Queens to be precise.

The city has teamed up with more than 50 registrars through which the .nyc domains can be purchased, these include Network Solutions, GoDaddy, Name.com and more. Prices vary per domain from anywhere to $25 to $50. Domains are sold on a first come, first served basis so you better be quick about it.

There’s a launch celebration scheduled for later today in New York City at the Flatiron Plaza. It will start at 1PM ET and people will be able to register for the domains on-site.
