john-chen-contextBlackBerry’s CEO John Chen recently spoke about how the company has managed to survive, which is why their focus is now aimed towards growth, and what better market to grow in other than China with its huge population and its developing economy, right? Well it seems that BlackBerry does have plans for the country, but they will be needing some help.

Attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation CEO Summit in Beijing, Chen met up with the heads of Chinese companies such as Lenovo, Xiaomi, and HTC. According to Chen, “It does seem that a more efficient way is to have a good partner to be here. I’m here this time to look at what opportunities there may be. We have not really focused on this market. It’s a huge market but it’s a very highly competitive market too.”

Given that there have been rumors regarding Lenovo’s potential interest in acquiring BlackBerry, Chen was quick to downplay the meeting and dismissing rumors that BlackBerry was there looking for potential buyers of the company. He was quoted as saying, “I’m not looking to sell the company. I’m very much looking to operate the company as an independent company.”

These are interesting times for BlackBerry, especially since at one point in time they were on the verge of closing up shop, which in the process allowed iOS and Android to gain a foothold in the enterprise space. However with Android and iOS devices being just as popular in China, BlackBerry certainly has their work cut out for them, but perhaps partnering up with a local company does seem like a better idea.
