diablo3header-1337811400The Diablo franchise which started off as an action RPG game certainly seemed like a more obvious candidate to be made into an MMORPG, versus the Warcraft franchise which was an RTS game. Now Blizzard has entertained the idea of a Diablo MMO in the past, but it looks like things have changed.

Speaking to the folks at Kotaku, lead content designer for Diablo Kevin Martens said that discussions to turn Diablo into an MMO are no longer happening. “There’s no discussion about a Diablo MMO anymore. It was a really interesting idea back when we were into it, but I think Diablo has a really strong fantasy on its own. Having a thousand people playing it with you on a server doesn’t dramatically increase it.”

So what direction could the Diablo franchise be headed for then? Well according to Martens, “I think us honing what we have now is way more tempting than trying to rethink [the formula]. We’re happy with where the game is at, with the understanding that no designer is ever truly happy with a game. We like the direction we’ve chosen for this.”

Blizzard has been steadily improving upon Diablo 3 over the past few years. They have added new features and have removed some features that were considered rather controversial, like the Auction House which even Blizzard themselves admitted was not the best idea due to the negative impact it had on the game.
