microsoft-logoWhere retro games are concerned, one would definitely be able to smile when one stumbles across a title that holds a special significance during your childhood or formative years. Some of us happen to have a special place in our hearts for ‘Battletoads’, which was a trademark that Rare registered all the way back in 1990, despite being cancelled in February of 2002. Having said that, the game franchise (which is pretty much self explanatory, actually – throw in “Battle” and “Toads” and you get a potent combination of a grown up Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, methinks) has seen an application for the trademark being allegedly filed on behalf of Microsoft.

It has also been said that the trademark has been specially linked to “game software”, so we can more or less know what to expect when the time comes – if this particular rumor turns out to be true, of course. Could Microsoft be on the path to actually bring back to life this classic Rare franchise that first debuted on the NES more than a couple of decades ago?

Do take this bit of news with a pinch of salt, however, since the filing might actually turn out to be fake. After all, it was just one week ago when an alleged trademark application for ‘Fallout: Shadow of Boston’ by Bethesda ended up to be a false lead, not to mention an application for ‘Half-Life 3‘ last year. Ah well, only time will be able to tell.
