With conventional watches you’re limited to just one watchface but that’s not the case with smartwatches. These wearable devices allow users to download and install as many virtual watchfaces as they like so users can decide between available options depending on their mood. Just don’t expect a virtual watchface replica of any major watch brand to land on your wearable device, a new report reveals and some of the biggest watch brands in the business are now going after people replicating their watchfaces for smartwatches.

Some of the biggest brands in the business, including but not limited to IWC, Panerai, Omega, Fossil, Armani, Michael Kors, Tissot, Certina, Mondaine, Swatch and Flik Flak, are shooting off cease and desist notices to websites and individuals hosting or offering replica watchfaces for download.

TorrentFreak claims to have seen notices sent by Richemont, a company which owns big brands like Cartier, IWC and Panerai, claim that digital watchfaces replicating its designs are a breach of its trademark rights. Websites and individuals offering them up for download are given 24 hours to take the watchfaces down or risk legal action.

FaceRepo is a website that offers watchfaces and it confirms receiving takedown notices from major watch makers. It is now using a keyword based filtering system where user uploaded content is immediately screened and stopped from being visible on the website immediately if its face name, description and tags contain brand names of some of these big watch makers.
