Most of us have smoke detectors in our homes. This is to alert us when there is smoke which could be sign that a fire has started. Either that or someone’s burnt the toast again. These devices work well for the most part, but with devices like the Nest Protect, it becomes a bit smarter.

Well if you’d rather not spend $100 on the Nest Protect which also means you’ll have to replace your current smoke detector, then the Roost battery could be a Kickstarter project worth funding as not only is it a cheaper option, but it will work with your current smoke detector as it simply swaps out your current 9-volt battery with the Roost.

The idea is simple – the Roost battery will not only power your smoke detector, but it will also pair with a smartphone app to bring to smarter alerts and notifications, which could be handy especially when you’re overseas. After all what good is a smoke detector if it detects a fire at home but there’s no one to tend to it, right?

Its creators have also promised that the battery should be good for around 5 years, meaning that after 15 years will it eventually stop being as cheap as the Nest Protect. Unfortunately as it stands, the Roost battery is still in its prototype stage. The creators have yet to squeeze it down to its promised battery size, but they expect that with the funding, they should be able to proceed and have a battery-sized version ready next spring.
