Samsung has announced today that the Gear VR Innovator Edition will be coming to the U.S. early next month. Powered by Oculus, this virtual reality headset provides a fully immersive virtual reality experience on the Galaxy Note 4. This step will go a long way in the immersion of VR mainstream as Samsung will be able to work with developers and partners who are interested in creating content for this device.

Unlike the Oculus this VR headset doesn’t have its own display. Instead it relies on that of the Galaxy Note 4, so that device is also required if you plan on picking up the Innovator Edition. It uses the 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display of the Note 4 to allow developers to design 360° experiences.

Samsung also lists how immersive experiences have potential in the enterprise, where they can be used for realistic training simulation for aircraft, views of scans in the medical field and even interactive learning experiences for students. The headset has a touchpad, a focus adjustment wheel and a back button. Overall the package is lightweight making it comfortable for users.

As part of the Gear VR Innovator Edition launch Oculus will also publish the Oculus Mobile SDK for Gear VR on its developer website, thus allowing people to create experiences. The Innovator Edition will be available for purchase in Frost White from Samsung’s website in December.
