youtube updateAs some of you might have heard, yesterday YouTube announced YouTube Music Key which is the company’s long rumored music streaming service that could potentially end up competing against the likes of Spotify and other music services. That being said, perhaps to celebrate the launch of the service, YouTube has also released an update for its iOS app.

The update will provide users with a more music-focused view of the dashboard. It will display the most popular music videos and artists on YouTube at the moment, followed by genre-specific charts and playlists, which sounds a lot like what Spotify is offering its users, except that this will be in video form.

Of course we expect that if a user likes what they’re hearing, they can always turn to Music Key to listen to the audio-only version instead of having to stream videos which could end up eating more data, although as it stands Music Key is in beta and will be invite-only. The updated app will also include a playback option called YouTube Mx that will create a randomized playlist that is based on a song or artist.

If you have yet to update your iOS YouTube app, you can do so by heading on over to the iTunes App Store for the download.
