allwinner-androidAllwinner Technology claims that the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop update will be made available for tablets that run on the Allwinner A33 quad-core as well as Allwinner A80 octa-core processors, not to mention having demonstrated the wonders of Android TV as it runs on a device that has an A80 processor underneath the hood.

This should not come across as surprising news at all though, taking into consideration how Google had taken special care to design Android in such a way so that it is compatible across a slew of devices. It remains to be seen, however, whether the device manufacturers from China will begin to take advantage of this situation and churn out highly affordable smart TV boxes using Google’s official Android TV software. Most of the time, the models that rolled out in recent times tend to come shipped with the full smartphone/tablet version of Android alongside a custom user interface.

As for Allwinner’s chips and their obvious capabilities when it comes to running Android TV, it remains to be seen whether device manufacturers will opt to load the vanilla version of Android, or to make use of a custom user interface. What do you think at the end of it all, or do you prefer to settle for something more “branded” like the Chromecast?
