firephone-displayEarlier this year Amazon launch the Fire Phone, an Android smartphone of their own efforts. This is a phone that has long been rumored to be in the works and while it did launch with some unique features, it just failed to take unlike the company’s Kindle Fire Android tablets. Well the good news for current Fire Phone owners is that Amazon has recently pushed out a huge update that will hopefully breathe some new life into the device.

The update is a huge one and will introduce a host of changes and new features to the handset. One of those changes is to its battery life, which in some reviews was found to be rather dismal. With the update, Amazon has include various system updates that they claim will help to improve the phone’s battery life.

We have yet to test this for ourselves so we can’t attest to those claims, but as with all batteries, your mileage will vary depending on how you use your handset. Other new features added includes VPN support, new messaging settings, the ability to block numbers, translation abilities, custom ringtones, improved camera software, and more.

It’s odd that some of these features are only making their way into the phone now as opposed to when it was first launched, but we suppose better late than never, right? The update version is 3.6.8 (3.6.5 for AT&T’s version) so if you don’t have that it means you haven’t updated your device yet.
