There are a variety of ways through which one can access Netflix. It can be opened up in a browser or accessed via an app on smartphones and tablets. What about DVRs? Dish is claiming itself to be the first major U.S. pay-TV provider to integrate the popular streaming service’s application within its hardware. This means that those who have the second-generation Hopper DVR from Dish will be able to stream Netflix from the set-top box itself.

This deal will help Netflix expand its presence in the living room, particularly in those homes where set-top boxes from companies like Apple and Amazon are not used. Netflix is available on devices like Apple TV, Fire TV and Chromecast so if anyone uses these devices alongside the Hopper DVR this integration doesn’t really do much for them.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings would probably want other pay-TV providers like Comcast and Time Warner Cable to follow suit but it is too soon to say at this point in time whether both companies will feel that its time to walk in Dish’s footsteps on this matter.

Dish is only making the Netflix app available on its second-generation Hopper DVR for now but in the coming month the company promises this application will also make its way to the Joey, Super Joey and Wireless Joey boxes. It is also possible that Dish may even integrate Netflix content into search results on the Hopper.
