Samsung seems to be trimming a lot of proverbial fat to streamline its devices and services business. The company was recently reported to be taking a similar step with ChatON, its cross platform messaging service, and now there are reports about WatchON being primed to bite the dust. A statement from Samsung confirms that the WatchON service will be shut down in certain markets by the end of this month.

The first indication that something like this was about to happen came through Twitter when screenshots of notifications being sent to WatchON users started being shared online. The screenshots revealed that Samsung WatchON would be shut down by December 31st.

An official statement provided by Samsung to the folks at Sammobile confirms that this is indeed happening. From December 31st, Samsung WatchON will discontinue full service in all markets except United States and Korea. Customers who have previously purchased content need not worry as the content will not be affected and will remain accessible through the relevant content provider’s application.

Those who just used the app for its remote control feature can now use Smart Remote, a standalone app that debuted with Galaxy S5 precisely for this purpose.

Customers who might have questions or concerns about this move are encouraged to get in touch with Samsung’s customer support team by heading over to this website.
