epiphany eyewearSnapchat is a company known for its app that allows users to send each other photos and messages that can self-destruct after a certain period of time, thus making their platform ideal for sending sensitive information that they don’t want to be leaked to the public. If anything we guess you could call Snapchat a messaging platform.

However it seems that the company has plans of being more than that. According to a recent report from Business Insider, they have revealed that Snapchat might have quietly picked up a company that makes Google Glass-like eyewear for $15 million earlier this year. The company is called Vergence Labs and is said to be worth $11 million in cash and $4 million in stock.

The company has created products like the Epiphany Eyewear which is a range of glasses that allows the wearer to record videos at a touch of a button. The videos are then uploaded to a cloud storage, but in the meantime they have the ability to hold 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB worth of videos, depending on which storage option you purchase.

Neither Vergence Labs nor Snapchat has announced anything yet, and the former’s website does not note that the company is owned by Snapchat in any way, but Business Insider claims that their source has told them that the deal is complete. Of course what Snapchat plans for Vergence Labs remains to be seen, but if true this is an interesting direction that the company is headed at.
