Back in October, it was revealed that retailer Staples experienced a security breach that could have potentially compromised both credit and debit card information. Well exactly how many cards were affected in the hack? Well Staples has since confirmed last Friday that the hackers were able to steal as many as 1.16 million credit and debit cards.
According to a statement released by the company, “Based on its investigation, Staples believes that malware may have allowed access to some transaction data at affected stores, including cardholder names, payment card numbers, expiration dates, and card verification codes.” Staples has also announced that they will offer customers free identity protection services.
This will include credit monitoring, identity theft insurance, and a free credit report. This will apply to customers who might have used their card at any of the 113 Staple stores that were affected by the hack.
The hack on Staples is only one of the latest hacks taking place around the country. Earlier there were reports that retailers such as Target, Neiman Marcus, and Home Depot were hacked as well, although it does not appear that there is a link between the hacks. Either way if you have shopped at Staples, you’ll want to keep an eye on that credit/debit card to make sure that no suspicious activities are taking place.
