twitter_logoNow that we are coming to the end of the year, you can be sure that there will be market research companies coming up with various statistics for the year – and the most tweeted event for the year would be part of it, too. It so happens that with Germany winning the World Cup over summer this year, that was the most tweeted event of the year – and not only that, it has also racked up its fair share of tweets to be the most tweeted event, ever, in history.

Definitely a record breaking year where Twitter is concerned, as Ellen DeGeneres’ Oscar selfie was also the most retweeted tweet ever in Twitter’s (relatively) short history. Other interesting statistics concerning selfies – since the first of January of this year, ‘selfie’ was mentioned over 92 million times on Twitter alone, which is a 500% increase, and it is also a dozen times more compared to the previous year.

In 2014 alone, Twitter managed to record 672 million tweets sent throughout this year’s World Cup finals in Brazil, where eight of the top 10 tweeted about moments of 2014 in the UK happened to be related to sports. As for the remaining two, they were New Year, and the other being One Direction picking up the gong for Best British Video Award at the Brits.
