For those of us who are not visually impaired, perhaps we take our sight for granted. We are able to see things like the expiration of milk, the color of fruits to tell if it has gone bad, mold on the bread, and so on. However for those who are blind, that’s an entirely different story, and now there’s an app that could help them out.

Dubbed Be My Eyes, this is basically an app that allows blind people to remotely request the assistance from users who can see. For example if they are home alone and need to know something on the label of their food product, they can launch the app and request the assistance from volunteers who will then tell them what it is.

According to the description of the app, “As soon as the first sighted user accepts the request for help a live audio-video connection will be set up between the two and the sighted user can tell the blind person what she sees when the blind user points his phone at something using the rear-facing camera.”

The app relies on volunteers and if you are too busy, the help request will then move on to the next user, and the next, until someone who is available picks up on the request. It is a pretty awesome and clever app and best of all, it is free. If you’d like to volunteer or if you know someone who is visually impaired and could use the app, it can be downloaded via the the iTunes App Store.
