spyware-rent-to-ownNow this could be a particularly chilling thought – how do you like the idea of a government agency keeping constant tabs on you as you move around? It sure as heck sounds unnerving, to say the least, but we have received word that the United States’ Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) happens to be spying on millions of Americans each day, while ensuring that they know where their targets are traveling to around the country. The Guardian claims that this is done by the constant tracking of car license plates.

Such a major, ongoing initiative would see the DAE collect and track license plates automatically, through the use of license plates readers that are located all over the country. Not only that, the DEA also has a program that would be able to track vehicles in real-time, and they also have a database which is large enough to stash hundreds of millions of records of motorists throughout the country. The main goal of this? To combat drug trafficking, but at what cost to personal liberty, privacy and freedom?

Of course, when you think about the ability for such information to be leaked out and fall into the hands of unscrupulous people, merging that with cell phone records, NSA information and the like, it does seem as though the government of the day has the ability to know all that is required concerning the average Joe on the street.
