apple_logoGoogle’s Android operating system has long had a lead over Apple’s iOS platform due to the fact that there are so many different types of Android phones out there that appeal to people on all sorts of budgets and needs. However it seems that recently according to the latest numbers released by Kantar Worldpanel, that gap appears to be closing.

According to Kantar’s figures, they revealed that in November 2014, Android had 48.4% of the US market share which is actually a 2.1% dip from November 2013. Compare that to iOS, Apple’s mobile platform saw a bump in 4.3% from the same period last year which brought to them a 47.4% market share in November 2014.

Essentially this means that the difference in market share between the two largest mobile operating systems is that of 1%. Interestingly enough Apple’s catchup to Android does not appear to have been due to iOS 8’s adoption which last we checked was slowly climbing to the 70% mark.

Apple’s CEO Tim Cook did state back in September that he believed that Apple’s new iPhones could trigger the mother of all upgrades and perhaps the increase in iOS’ market share could be related to that. In any case it will be interesting to see this year’s numbers and if Apple will be able to overtake Google or if Google will find a way to pull ahead of the competition.
