mlk-mtvThere is a new initiative that is going around by MTV, where it is known as #TheTalk, where MTV intends to engage with their audiences in what is known as a “color brave” conversation. Such conversations will see cultural figures such as Kendrick Lamar, Common, Big Sean, Ava DuVernay, David Oyelowo, Penn Badgley, Jordin Sparks, Pete Wentz, Sen. Rand Paul, Rep. John Lewis, and Sen. Cory Booker, among others, lead it. Not only that, #TheTalk that will kick off at 9:00 a.m. ET/PT on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, will also see MTV deliver a 12-hour period of programming that will air in black and white.

This is the first time that something like this has happened in the network’s history. All commercial blocks will start off with personal reflections on race from the luminaries mentioned earlier, and here is an excerpt from Ava DuVernay:

“To be color blind is not a thing I think that one should boast about. See color and celebrate it. See our differences and celebrate it. When someone says to me ‘I’m color blind, I don’t see color’, I’m thinking they’re missing out…”

It is interesting to see such an effort being launched or pushed forward so that the world will be able to better learn in living together in harmony. [Press Release]
